The normal dimensions of the thyroid gland include two lobes and the isthmus between them. The lobes of the thyroid gland should be 50-60 mm long. The length of the thyroid isthmus should be 15-20 mm, and its normal thickness is 5-10 mm. The volume of the thyroid gland is measured by ultrasound (US). It should not exceed 18 ml in women and 25 ml in men.
Thyroid diseases involve excessive or insufficient production of hormones. One of the first alarming signs may be an enlarged neck, which often indicates that the size of the thyroid gland has changed. The situations in which the neck has changed its shape and size suddenly should be of particular concern; there is also a group of patients who inherently have a broad anatomical structure of this part of the body. However, if you suspect an enlarged thyroid gland in yourself, this is a way to recognize it initially.
